“Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted, when we tolerate what we know to be wrong, when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy or too frightened, when we fail to speak up and speak out, we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice.” -Robert F. Kennedy
Hi, my name is Mike Clifford.
I’m a lifelong resident of North Smithfield and have served on numerous town boards over the years. I share the same appreciation that many others do for the town we call home. I am however, becoming increasingly concerned that decisions and actions of our current leaders will adversely affect our town and its residents. While I appreciate the willingness and sacrifice of those who volunteer to serve in town government, it remains a principle of our democracy that elected officials (whether friend or foe) be held accountable for their decisions and actions by the public. That principle has been met with great resistance in recent months.

Increasingly it seems that those who dare to challenge decisions by our current elected officials are mocked or labeled by some as uninformed, malcontents or divisive in a feeble attempt to deflect attention from the issue. It also concerns me that abiding by the Town Charter and complying with both town ordinances and state law are not a priority for some. These trends should alarm every resident who cares about this town.

This page will aim to keep residents informed about issues and attempt to separate fact from fiction so you can judge for yourselves whether decisions being made are right or wrong. Please remain engaged with the page, become informed and exercise your right to shape a better community. I encourage a free exchange of constructive thoughts and comments on this page. Please encourage friends and family to do the same and please spread the word about this page.

I’ve shared my opinion in this introduction but be assured that future posts will offer facts to substantiate any position I may address. Finally, just to be clear, I have no intentions of running for any town office and have no personal political agenda. I’m quite content to just offer commentary from time to time.

Mike
